Well, where to begin. I know it feels like a lot of people will be upset with the anime I may talk about, and personally I am a little alright with that. I only say that because everyone has their own opinion. I am sure I would disagree with some people’s opinion on these, if they were to make a list. But overall remember this is for fun. It would be nice to see who agrees and who disagrees with this list. Personally as always I would love to hear a few anime you think are over hyped.
Due to the nature of labeling Anime as Over Hyped I am only doing ones that I have seen. I will also mention if it deserves the hype or not. Because sometimes it does, sometimes it does not. Either way without further ado, let’s get started.
Number 5: Death Note
So, most of the ones on this list are ones I saw before getting into talking about anime online. Most I have seen a lot of people talked about, Death Note being one of them. I am not sure why it is on this list. It was either this or Code Geass. Both series still get mentions from time to time and still feel like they are relevant despite being almost a decade old.
Death Note I saw in my first year of watching anime. I really enjoyed it, after seeing an abridge series I was a little hyped to check it out. I mean the only reason why it is on this list is because of the second season, second arc, or whatever, those last few episodes.
First half, yes, deserved the hype, praise, everything. Second half not so much. It almost makes the hype for the first half not worth it. Between that ending, and no L, the second half lacked so much. The first half was just so much more. So to me the over personal hyped died in the second half.
This could be higher on the list, but the only reason it is not, partially due to the other series having more hype, but because I haven’t seen it in almost four years so my opinion might change if I were to rewatch.
Does it deserve it? Yes/No
Number 4: One Punch Man
Does it deserve it? Yes
Might as well start explaining why the hype is worth it. At the same time this show has way too much hype to it. The level of hype for it just exploded. I mean how well known it is, well, yeah.
Anyway, it sort of does not deserve the hype. The reason for it, well, the show all revolves around the same joke that everything is beaten in a single punch. But that is the only reason, besides too much hype, why I think it is over hyped and does not deserve it.
Looking at the series on a different level, it does not always come down to that single punch. It is about the heroes. They could be very strong or very weak, but they all try to make a difference. The show might be known for its humor and action, where the hype comes from, but it deserves the hype because of all the characters playing a much more important role then they look like they do.
Some shows, like Death Note, who had good characters, eventually that sort of faded because some event or it dragged on too ling. The characters are what make the hype worth it for One Punch Man. More than anything the hype is misplaced.

Number 3: Kill la Kill
This one is a little tricky. To me Kill la Kill popped into my head. I mean if I saw Gurren Laggan, it probably would be here instead. Kill la Kill I really enjoyed. But let’s face it there is or at least was too much hype for when it aired. It has been some time since it finished airing, and although I would like to say there is no more hype for it, it just died down a little.
I mean I did enjoy the series. The middle was a little rocky at times and the ending was just an insane fight. I would say the characters make the hype worth it, but they do not. They are all enjoyable in their own way. The story is well, a little weird at times, but it does not deserve the hype.
I would say more but I think the crazy of the outfit is still around somewhat so case in point.
Does it deserve it? No
Number 2: Sword Art Online
Getting into the probably obvious territory for the last two. I will do my best not to bash SAO, but no promises.
Does it deserve it? NOOOO!!!!
It is a terrible love story. I read the light novels, and well, it is just too rushed. The anime adds to it by giving the side stories at the same time, but the first volume was one second they have not seen each other for like a year, then they are married. The villain had no idea why he did what he was doing. Half the stuff in the first arc alone makes no sense. Fairy Dance made even less sense with a perverted twist.
I tried watching SAO II but ended up accidentally dropping in 7 or 8 episodes in. I did not see a point carrying on. There were just so many plot holes in story problems. The characters were alright at best, but all the women were the same damsels in distress. Season 2 had Sinon, who was afraid of guns yet playing a gun game, where is the logic? Why did they have to get rid of Asuna from being the bad ass that she was at the start of the first volume only to make her a house wife by the end of the same volume? So many more complaints!
Alright I am stopping here before more rage ensues.
Number 1: Attack on Titan
Does it deserve it? No, providing I don’t get mauled by a titan after posting this.
This series is the king of over hyped anime. I mean do not get me wrong, it is good. It just becomes way, and I mean, way too predictable. The series started grabbing attention of killing off characters. But at some point you are going to know who will live or die. Akame ga Kill kills off anyone, even Tatsumi, the main character was not safe in the anime and now even in the manga. AoT does not get that. We all know if Levi dies the hearts of seemingly million fan girls will die as well. Anyone that is seemingly important will probably live. It is like how on the Walking Dead if a side character is getting too much characterization that episode they will die. I have only read where the anime stopped. But I would not be surprised if that sort of trend continued for AoT. Yes I will be watching season two to see if my thoughts are correct.
This series just exploded with hype, it did not stop for well over a year after it ended, only to continue ones it aired dubbed on Toonami, which was alright. This series did have a drop in hype. But with season two coming out this year, the hype will return and strike back with vengeance.
As always what anime do you think are over hyped? Do you agree or disagree with some of mine?
Any ideas for future top 5s would be gladly appreciated.
As always I hope you enjoyed.

I agree with all of those choices. I have no interest in seeing Attack on Titan with all the hype it got and I’ve seen anime series that handles similar concepts better like Now and Then Here and There. Of all the anime I’ve seen that were overhyped, I would say…
Evangelion (Yeah, I said it!)
Naruto (kind of obvious though)
Bleach
Your Name (I liked it, but it’s not my favorite Shinkai flick)
The Garden of Words (the animation is pretty, but the plot is SO questionable)

I haven’t seen/read much of SAO, but some people talk about it as if it’s so unique and revolutionary. I’m always thinking, “Um, .hack and a whole bunch of other shows say hi.” If it’s good, fine, but don’t act like it’s the first “problems in the game world affect the real world” story.

The thing is people really do treat it like the first, I may never of seen .hack, but I heard of it before SAO.

Aside from One Punch Man (which I have yet to watch) I thoroughly enjoyed all the shows on the list. In my book they lived up to the hype, but not show is perfect so I can see why some people would say they are over rated.
In terms of how long the series ran for and how much merchandise they sell I would say that stuff like Naruto and One Piece is over hyped.

Interesting take on what over hyped is for you. I actually wrote this post a month ago, so I am trying to remember if I wrote that I see over hyped as a lot of people talked about it, recommend it even after it has been done for some time. I enjoyed most of the shows on this list, but it is probably clear which one I did not.

One Piece really had hype back in the day, now I think it has less then what it did. I think Hunter X Hunter got hype only because it is returning again.

I remember Mekakucity Actors had a really big hype before it aired. Haven’t really heard anyone mentioned it though. Probably just the community I’m following.

No, I remember Mekakucity Actors getting hyped, only that hype immediately died once it stopped airing.

Death Note will always be the number one most over-hyped anime for me. My goodness, I hated that show. SAO is a close second place.
As for the others, well I haven’t seem them yet, so I can’t really say 😛

It may not have received as much hype as some of these other series, but I went into Angel Beats! with a lot of expectations that weren’t fulfilled.

WHY NO FOR SAO¿¿¿¿??????

Mostly due to the romance. It was aimed to revolve around that main one only to be too rushed and for Asuna to be thrown aside for the harem route. Even then no focus is brought on any of the female characters. To top ot off the are constant problems with the plot, such as the second and third arc, but also the first arc and main reason for everyone being stuck in SAO for an unknown reason due to the creator forgetting. I could go on, but my rage will be too great.

I definitely agree that hype is not necessarily a bad thing. There are some people who see all the hype surrounding an anime and instantly run away from it, but some of those shows really do deserve the build up. I also agree a lot with what you said. Granted I have not seen One Punch Man yet, and I did enjoy Attack on Titan. However, what you said about SAO, Kill la Kill, and Death Note is spot on for me. I never really understood what made these shows so special. SAO was okay at first but got worse the longer it went on, and the more it attempted to develop the characters.
Great post! I really enjoyed it!

I mean, some don’t deserve the hype, that does not mean I did not enjoy them. Kill la Kill I enjoyed, it just had that little boring arc.
But yeah when it comes to hype with anime it honestly makes me a little curious. Sometimes it can be good, sometimes not so much.

Every season there is one or two Anime being hyped. All thanks to a studio, artist or writer.
Last season there we talks about Active Raid and erased.
I think the hype creates expectations that, Like attack on Titan were not met. And with SAO2 It was even bigger and became more disappointing that way.
Having seen each Anime it is hard to say about hype as it does not always reach the place I live. So I am lucky I guess in that way that i enter each season with out any hype.

Although this season it really does not feel like there are many shows with over hype. I can only think of one that might have hype, but it does not seem like too much to it.

An interesting article. For me, I enjoyed Death Note a sa whole, but definitely preferred it while L was around. I’ve not seen One Punch Man or Kill La Kill so can’t comment, and have only seen ep1 of SAO. Attack On Titan I avoided like the plague due to the amount of hype. I gave in eventually, and gave it a look in, and I did enjoy it. Had I watched it at the peak of the hype though … that may ahve tainted it.
My pick for most over-hyped would be Gurren Laggan. The amount of recommendations I had for it based on it being the greatest show ever was ridiculous. The first episode was fun, then it collpased into being inconsistent, annoying and just generally meh for me. I gave up part way through episode six.

I think I mentioned with Kill la Kill if I saw Gurren Laggan it probably would have been in that spot.So much hype to it, but I just wanted to stick with shows I seen.

‘Tis a sensible idea. Without seeing the show, it would be difficult to judge whether it was over hyped or not 🙂

Only saw a small portion of death note, so can’t really comment on that. It seemed pretty fun.
Have yet to see One Punch Man, but the manga couldn’t keep me interested after the first chapter, as the humor and whatnot just didn’t click with me. Maybe someday…
KlK? Yeah, I’d agree, it was fairly overhyped. I mean, i enjoyed it, but it definitely didn’t deserve the hype it had.
SAO – While I agree it was overhyped…I actually enjoyed it a lot. Well, season 1. Season 2 was ugh…until it got out of GGO. Someday, go back to it and watch the second and third arc. GGO is pretty much unnecessary. Though, the reason she is in a gun game, is so she can be okay with holding a gun in real life. It doesn’t really work until Kirito uses his magic plot powers and fixes her problem. But the third arc…It’s probably a lot better because it doesn’t revolve around Kirito surprisingly. Just Asuna (and she’s made out to be pretty great) and some other characters. A lot more interesting than watching Kirito add to his harem for 17 episodes (or however long it was)
AoT – I really really didn’t like the show. It was extremely boring to me, so yes. 100%
Something else that’s overhyped….Utena. this is mostly only hyped in the yuri circles probably, but I can’t even get why….it’s such a horrible show to promote yuri. Yet, people latched onto it, and loved it, and I’ll never understand why…Yuri Kuma Arashi kinda goes with this too. Strangely, the manga is much better about yuri than the anime. Even though the manga is apparently written by the same person. Very confusing that situation is.
Sound Euphonium – No….so much no. There were about 3 maybe 4 episodes throughout that I found enjoyable. The rest, the majority of them, I was struggling to keep awake. The show did exposition after exposition after exposition. And things just kind of happened. The pacing was really out of sync. And then there was the yuri fandom….They hyped this up to the moon on “yuri” content, but in the end, it’s just baiting. Yet, the community still hold onto their denial and continually treat it like some kind of yuri goldmine…For me, this the single most overhyped anime ever. I’ll watch season 2 though, just in hopes of Natsuki providing where Kumiko and Reina won’t. She was easily my favorite character in the show.

Never saw Utena, but whenever I hear people say what the best yuri anime is, this seems to come up.
As for Yuri Kuma Arashi, I did not finish.
Sound Euphonium, hard to say for me. It is a little slow pacing, but I found it enjoyable. It did have too much hype though, even though it was the whole Yuri thing that got me to see it. First ep did not do it for me so I did not try ep 2, until the yuri thing. Then I was able to enjoy it. But this did not really pop into my head until you mentioned it that it is over hyped. It probably would be at number 6 in all honesty.

Utena was the yuri-est yuri anime that existed for about SEVEN YEARS; I think that fact alone would justify a good portion of the hype even if it had been fully surpassed in every way since then. (And it hasn’t.)

To me, Utena always felt like het with a small dash of yuri just because. Like, I was devastated when I watched it. So much stuff happened that was not what I was supposed to be in for. It was just a whole lot of bait and switch until the end maybe?
I enjoyed it. But all the same, I think it’s really deceiving to label it a “yuri anime”. Just my personal thoughts on that matter.
