Finally, an episode that did not end on a cliffhanger, of course this was just a single episode, and not meant to continue in any way. Either way, might as well say it now, it was a decent episode. I hope more are like this in the future, although I doubt it since we are 8 episodes in of 14. So, let’s get right into it.

The Plot:

So, two girls, who I only know one of their names, Mary. But, anyway, these two go into some ruins. I really liked the Indiana Jones’ references, between grabbing the hat while the door is closing and the rolling bolder. It was a nice way to start the episode seeing one of my favorite movie series being referenced.

Anyway, back to Gran and others. They apparently transported that loli shopkeeper to a new island. Instead of being paid for anything, they get a discount on the store she is now able to open on the island. Also, she gives them a job to explore some ruins.

After a silly scene with Gran getting everyone lost, yeah I get the feeling this may happen again, they make it to the ruins.

So, they investigate it, of course they all fall through the ground at random, and get separated in two groups.

Luckily, Lyria and Gran have some sort of tracking knowledge of where the other is.

Then Gran gets some character development, on how he is pretty stubborn and how he wants to do things on his own.

Then the two treasure hunter girls fight this monster, only for Gran to save them. They fight it, Gran gives the monster a slam dunk with a bomb to its mouth.

Everyone meets up, Gran finds this cool sword, and the ruins disappear. The shopkeeper decides to pay them with free supplies, since the person who gave them the job did not want to pay for nonexistent ruins. Thus, the episode ends.

Overall Thoughts:

Like I said, it was a good episode. It was nice to see one, not a cliffhanger, but also just a single episode. Until now it was just one place to another to another, with it really feeling too much like a game and trying to follow the path as is. It was nice to see the show doing its own thing.

I mean, there are points in the game where you can get that character’s backstory, I could only guess maybe this was one of them. Even then it felt like a good distraction before what next week will probably end in a cliffhanger, but who knows.

This episode gave some character development, in terms of backstory, to Gran, although it was minor, it was still really good, even though it seems like it was just thrown there and he has not really demonstrated that in any way to date. It was still nice to see the main character, who seems like a generic main character more and more of a mobile game, some sort of focus.

As much as I hope something like this happens again, with a single episode to focus, I doubt it, but it was nice to see either way and a nice break from the usual.

Overall Enjoyment: 90/100

Granblue Fantasy is streamed by both Crunchyroll and Daisuki for free in North America.

Either way, what where your thoughts on the series? If you read the manga, what are your thoughts on that in general?

As always I hope you enjoyed.
