Top Five Comedic Characters

top 5

Comedy is something that is different for everyone. It is a thing about enjoyment. What you find funny and what I find funny are two different things. The same could be said about just about anything, what you enjoy and what do I enjoy. Simply because this one is focused on anime, and this blog being a dominantly anime and manga related content, although I wish to add more comic related content and I am just unsure how. Anyway that was getting off topic. So, here are the personal top five comedic characters in anime and manga, what are yours?

Top Five Comedy Series

top 5

Well it is April, and the jokes from April Fools have now passed. Some were good, while others not so much. As an anime fan who lives in America it feels like I get two days of April First, the first day being on March 31st, where I have to question if an announcement is real or not when it comes to anime since in Japan it is April 1st. then when it finally becomes that day here in the US, it is a matter of getting everything else that was the day before leftovers. So, with that out of the way to explain the fact that this month is rather comedic, time to go down on what my top five comedy series are.

Day 23: Favorite Attack someone used in an Anime

Mine, although picking every single move from Fate Stay Night and Fate Zero is not my choice, but if I had to say obviously Sabers, I am going with Earth Punch. The move is from D-Frag, and  Chitose Karasuyama uses it. Now when I say Earth Punch, you are probably thinking the likes of a Pokemon move, well it is not. It is when she punches someone after she just finished playing in a sandbox and has dirt on her hands, the life of a highschooler at its finest.

What is your favorite attack in an anime?

My Top 15 Anime Series

So, since it is my birthday when this goes out, February 22, I decided to try to count down my Top 15 anime series. I know what my Top 10 are. So, it really comes down to what the other five are. That right there will be the tricky part. I have given it some thought prior to writing this what they would be. Personally I could only think of two more. Since I will be starting at number 1 and counting up by the end I hope to figure out what exactly is my top 15 anime series.

Now, before I begin I have a way of putting shows onto the list. It comes down to several factors. One being my personal enjoyment (most important), another being emotional attachment, and lastly, although there are probably more, the more I think about it when it is not airing and how obsessive I am of it. The series that I watch can be in any category and I am always open to suggestions for series to watch. The only thing that I do not classify as anime is henti, so do not recommend anything ever like that to me.

Number 1: Fairy Tail

Yes, Fairy Tail, although none of the shows in the top five should come as a surprise seeing that my first Top Five was based on my favorite series. In a way this one is like three Top Fives shoved into one. That is beside the point.

Fairy Tail was one series that really got me into anime. It was also the series that really made me watched sub anime, which is a majority of now. I do wish to watch more dub anime, but it is always far and few between. At the same time Fairy Tail really got me into manga once it took that year off for the manga to progress more.

I am not sure if I have to go more into really any of the top five since I brought them up so often. Without Fairy Tail I probably would not have seen the amount of anime that I have today as well as read the amount of manga that I have read today as well.

Fairy Tail Members

Number 2: A Certain Magical Index/ A Certain Scientific Railgun

I count both of these series at number two since they exist in the same universe and have the same characters, just a different main character and different stories that is all. If Soul Eater was on this list then Soul Eater Not would be at the same spot as well. Anyway, I cannot wait for the Heavy Object anime since it is by the same creator. I am a little disappointed that a third season for the anime was not announced, but in the meantime Yen Press is releasing the novels and I can buy those time to time to fill that void.

Although it might not have the same attachment as Fairy Tail for some things I still remember the first day of watching it. I managed to watch the first seven or so episodes in one sitting, only then to run late to the person I was supposed to go and tutor. Watching it somehow I knew I was going to enjoy it always. I watched the dub when that came out and enjoyed it as well. My only problem with the second season is that it makes the series feel a little incomplete and with my knowledge of what happens in the Light Novels next I could easily see why. SO, MAKE SEASON THREE ALREADY!!!

Number 3: Date A Live

Well, first I would like to say duh for this one. At the time this is going up currently my image is of Tohka as a cat, who looks so adorable, but that is besides the point. In the 30 Day anime challenge 2 days are dedicated to this Date-A-Live-Logoseries. I stated in my first review and several other cases the amount of emotional value that was put into this series for me. I have no idea why I was so obsessive with this series, but it is true. This series did a lot of things differently compared to a majority of the other Harem based series that I have seen before, namely less fan service with the exception of that one anime only episode that was nothing but fan services as well as the OVA, not counting the second OVA that focused on Kurumi which was really good although she is not my favorite character like she is for a lot of people. Anyway, blah blah blah, Date A Live, it is at number 3.

Number 4: The Monogatari SeriesBakemonogatari_Logo

Although this series and I have a huge love hate relationship, it is easily my favorite. The reason for the love hate relationship is the fact that I find it hard to watch, I sort of blame my ADHD for that. At the same time it is more of the fact that recently the episodes come out in bulk. I like it when it is just weekly. Since this series was announced to have all the novels animated, I really hope they go back to a weekly series format or else it will be a huge struggle for me to watch. I stated back in December when I did my Top Five Favorite series, that I still have not finished the episodes that came out in August, I still have not finished that one nor started the one that came out on New Year’s. Even with the fact I struggle to watch this series I know I could go in and enjoy it like crazy and not be disappointed, which is why it is at number 4.

senjougahara

Number 5: Fate Series

I have been debating for a while now that maybe this series should be at number 4, but in all honesty it is good where it is. Really anything as of right now in my Top Five has their spot saved. Now, I am talking about the entirety of Fate series, so Fate Stay Night, Fate Zero, Fate Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks, and everything else that fits saber lionthere. I would say everything in that universe, but that would include other Type Moon series, which are in different spots, on in which is on this list. Well, I mean there are several things that I enjoy about this series. For starters, Saber, which is a story for the 30 Day Anime Challenge Day 7. Anyway, the story, the characters, and of course my favorite meme of all time came from this series, “People Die if they are Killed.” Anyway since there are so many series in this franchise, I am finding it a little hard to talk about why I like it as a whole besides the fact that it is interesting and I enjoy it. So I will leave it at that.

Number 6: Kara no Kyokia: The Garden of Sinners

So, this is one of the few anime films that I have seen, not counting ones that were for anime series. Paradox Spiral, the fifth film, is easily my favorite. The battle and the fact it is split into three parts and gives a little more shinkiinformation each and every time I enjoy. I actually stopped watching the films at three before coming back six months later, and I was so glad I did. I would probably put the third film at my second favorite. The battles I really like as well as how the story at times can be a little self-contained between films. Since the films are already told out of order, it gives that sense even more that you could almost watch any of the films in any order and still enjoy it. Anyway, this is another series from Type Moon. A little Easter egg that I noticed was that the cigarettes that Toko Aozaki smokes are the same as Kiritsugu Emiya smokes. At the same time Toko Aozaki is related to the mentor in Tsukihimi. Anyway, that Easter Egg only makes me want to see a crossover more with all the series, and has nothing to do with the fact that it is on the list at number 6.

Kara_no_kyokuai_logo

Number 7: Oh My Goddess

Not going to lie I am starting to see a trend with the series that appear on this list where I stop for a long time only to come back and finish the series. I stopped around episodes 18 only to come back almost eight months later tooh my goddess finish the series. It was like this for the previously mention Kara no Kyokia and Monogatari. This was also the second anime series that I ever watched, why I watched it, I do not know. However there is a lot I still wish for this series. Although it does not need a proper ending in my opinion for the anime, I would still like more episodes since the manga ended and gave a worthy ending to the 26 yearlong series. The series has that romance element that I really like. It has hardly any, if at all, fan service. It really focuses on the relationship and advancing that relationship, which is why I really liked it.

Number 8: Akame ga Kill

Although I did not like the fact that it felt rushed and gave an original ending. It does not change the fact that the twist at the end of episode 23 made me really enjoy this series. If not for that, this series probably would not be on this list. It is based off my favorite manga. Although what I like about this series comes down to two things For starters it is not afraid to kill off any character in anyway, to the point where it could be anyone in the next chapter, unlike Attack on Titian where the main characters are pretty much safe at some point. The next thing, which was a huge turn off for people was the comedy.Akame

Yes, I do not like the comedy of the series, but I like where it is. It is more shown in the earlier half, before only showing every now and again and has little appearance later in the series. It is the same way in the manga where there might not be a joke for four or five chapters. I think this is really done well, with the fact that this is a serious series. The comedy adds to the fact that Tatsumi does not really know what is going on in the world and has a more childlike and innocent like view of it, thus the comedy, but once he gets used to the world and how it works it gets a more mature look at things, thus the comedy not appearing as much. If this was done on purpose, then I have to say it was well done, if not then I am just glad that it took more serious turn later in the series since it was well needed. A lot of my reason for liking this series comes from the fact I really like the manga, and it is a lot better than some of my favorite manga series that got an anime.

tatsumi-incursio

Number 9: Attack on Titian

Again, it really will feel like I will repeat myself here. Attack on Titian, I will say is over hyped, very over hyped. Personally I am unsure why it is on the list. I mean I like it, and I read the manga, right now I have the first 8 volumes. But a part of me does not want it on this list, while another part of me wants it to be. It is very conflicting. I like the action, and the story. Again I literally mentioned it, but at some point it becomes predictable who they will attack on titannot kill off. Akame ga Kill will kill anyone Attack on Titian only kills background characters at one point and the ones that do get killed off too that might sort of be important, where not around long enough to make a huge impact. Anyway, this is not about bashing Attack on Titian truth is this was higher on the list until Akame ga Kill aired. I did not see the whole dub, but I watched some of it on Toonami, which was back when I was able to live on my own and be able to watch Toonami, and I have to say I did like the dub, it was well done in comparison to the sub. The cast was well done and was rather interesting. Anyway, I do like the manga, although if I had to put it in a place, it would probably be at number 8 for favorite manga.

Number 10: D-Frag!D-Frag!

This is another case where I like the manga and it got me into the anime. I think out of all the anime adaptions for manga into anime, D-Frag is defiantly up there for the best and closest to the source material. The jokes and everything was pulled off so well. For manga, it is ranked at number 7 for me, with how funny it is. The anime defiantly lived up to my expectations and went a little beyond making me enjoy it just a tad bit more than I do for the manga. If you are into comedy series, and I do not really like recommending series (especially ones that I am hugely fond for), but this and what is at number 12 I would have to recommend, although this one I would have to recommend more which will be more obvious once number 12 is revealed.

Number 11: Magimagi logo

Alright, so this one and number 13 are two series that I have yet to complete at this time, but they both fit into what makes an anime my favorite. I read the manga and I just really enjoy the series. Personally I hope the Sinbad spin off gets its own anime series and not just OVA. But I read the manga to where the second season ends and I can tell I will like it. I might struggle a tad bit with the fact that there is a huge arc that makes up the second season, but it is interesting. I mentioned on several occasions that I like the concept of magic in the series and just the overall fantasy element.

 aladdin

Number 12: Seitokai YakuindomoSeitokai Yakuindomo

For starters I would like to say this series is basically, for lack of a better term, s*x jokes the animation. Although I might, but sort of would want to recommend it, that is only if you can stand the jokes. I just think they are well done and it is always funny. The reason why I called it what I did, was mostly due to the fact that is all those jokes are, for twenty minutes one after the other after the other. This humor is defiantly not for everyone, but it manages to hold for the over 30 episodes that there are. Sometimes I wonder how I am able to stand it since I do not like anything like that, but it is not visual seeing the parts, rather than just jokes revolve around the part so I am fine. This series is just always funny and when an OVA comes out it is just a matter of time until it is subbed, even if it takes a month or two it is well worth it.

Number 13: Gintama

gintoki

I started this series back in January, and it is easily one of my favorites now. I tend to avoid long running series. Sure, Fairy Tail I watched and caught up with but I was just starting to watch anime. Then there was Bleach which I dropped since the filler in the main story fights was getting annoying. I have not really tried to get into a long running series since then. Although I have wanted to get into One Piece and Naruto, but there is just too many episodes even if I skip the filler and I do not have the time to do that. Well, enough about that this series I find funny. Currently I am almost at episode ninety and I have not really seen a decline in humor. In fact I laugh more and more as time passes it seems. This series is well done when it comes to not trying too hard to make a joke and not repeating jokes, which is always good. It also does not really stick to one type of joke either, although parodies are plentiful. This series is still enjoyable.

Number 14:  Birdy the Mighty Decode

I was really struggling to figure out what to do for number 15. Then this series came to me and I realized I needed to switch it with what I had for number 14. This series I really enjoyed. I watched the dub for it. Personally I really birdywished they made another season. At the same time it was well done in its own way. The animation, the story, the characters, there is so much to this series that I liked. Again this shares a similar tale with Monogatari, only it was when I was watching season 2 and I stopped for some time. This was due to me have a job in the summer that made me work for 40 hours, so the only anime I could watch was what was currently airing at the time. Granted I was able to watch Angel Beats in one sitting that summer, but this series I really enjoyed and wanted to go back to watching no matter what. I really like it in so many ways and wish I could put it higher on the list, the only there is no room.

Number 15: High School DXDHigh_School_DxD

I cannot believe I put this one on the list, although I hate ecchi and although I do not like fan service. I still find it odd that my biggest guilty pleasure is this series. When season 3 was announced I was actually glad. The only downside to the fact is that each season only covers 2 novels, with their being over 19 out at this time, well there is no way they will fully adapt the series, unless they do something crazy because by my estimate they would need a little over 70 or more episodes to do it, for the ones that they have yet to adapt. Anyway, once I shut off my mind and watch this series I like it I guess. I like the plot and concepts, but the fan service can be a little over done all the time. At the same time despite me not liking fan service and ecchi, I still find this series enjoyable somehow.

So that is my list. I had a lot of fun doing this one. This is also my longest article to date as well. Anyway I hope you enjoyed this. Also other series I was thinking of putting here was Higurashi When They Cry (Which is defiantly at number 16 since it is not on here), Selector Infected WIXXOS (defiantly one surprising series that I did not expect a lot from at first would be at number 17), Parasyte (however it is not done yet and too soon to say), and Death Parade (Again too soon to say, but probably will not do to other reasons).

You do not have to explain your top 15, but what series would you consider putting into it? Also are any of the series in my top 15 are in yours?

30 Day Anime Challenge Day 21

Day 21: Favorite Goofy Character

gintoki

This is another one that falls into the category of being difficult to figure out. I think it is more on how I label goofy character. A comedic character is different than one that would be goofy in the sense of clumsy or just plain silly. So, at first what came to mind was Gin from Gintama. However, what really popped into my head was more of an entire cast rather than a single character. In that case I would have to give it to every female character in D-Frag. But since it is a character I think I will go with Gin, since the characters in D-Frag shine their brightest and goofiest when together and I could not choose just one.

Day 20

Day 22

Who do you think is your favorite goofy character?

Top Five Male and Female Characters of 2014

top 5

Throughout the year there has been dozen upon dozen of new and old characters. Some have returned after a long absence, while others are fresh faces. So, like all of my Top Fives these are based off series that I have seen, at least in most cases, and are obviously bias. These are all characters that have made an appearance throughout 2014. Much like last week’s Top Five, this week will display two different characters simultaneously.

Number 5: Son Hak (Yona of the Dawn) and Iona Hikawa (Happiness Charge Precure)

Let me just shake my head in embarrassment for starters admitting that I like Happiness Charge Precure. As I stated in the last Top Five I got into the Magical Girl genre last year. It is thanks to this series. So, let me avoid that discussion for some other day and go back to this actual discussion.

I began to watch Yona of the Dawn very late into the season, episode twelve had yet to air and binge watchinghak began. Of the male characters that have appeared so far I like Hak. As you will soon find out there will be a trend for what I like in my male and female characters and Hak fits into that category. Funny and strong, and he will just do about anything for the people he cares for.  Sure at times he picks on Yona, but I think that is really where both characters can shine the most and what makes both stand out. However he can stand out more on his own at times. I know the scene that made me like his character, in episode five or six, when the realization that the poison has little to no effect on him while it would have token down several people at that point and he continued to take down several people. It is more of admiration that makes me enjoy this character which is why he is at number five despite the show not ending.

Now back to the harder to describe part since I brought up the fact that I like Happiness Charge Precure with Cure_FortuneIona aka Cure Fortune is my favorite of the bunch. I knew when doing the top five this is one of the characters that automatically pops into my head, as well as a few others, which did not make the list. Could I have used those characters, yes I could have, but Cure Fortune is better than the ones that did not make it. She is a bit of a Tsundere, at least at first. She is cold and refuses to join them, which are up until about episode twenty when Phantom strikes, anyway enough about the plot. After she joins the group her true self starts to get shown. Besides being a powerhouse and adorable, her story development is good, and I like the stories that revolve around her. Although normally for characters I also look for comedy, at times when it comes to the female character it is more of their attitude in certain situations, and she fits it better than most do. Okay, so avoiding more embarrassment I am done now with this talk.

Number 4: Mamoru Chiba (Sailor Moon Crystal) and Akatsuki (Log Horizon)

Seriously, what is it with magical girl series characters making it into this week? Anyway although no other Tuxedo_Maskmagical girl character will be in it after this one, for the male characters Tuxedo Mask fits perfectly. Again much like Hak this goes with how he interacts with the female protagonist. Although he does not always have a lot of screen time, when he does sometimes he can be a main focus, be his rude behavior or his gentlemen like behavior in scenes is where I enjoy his character the most. I like how even though he is a male character his is not the strongest, but he still wants to be stronger to protect Usagi. That and despite the fact compared to all the other characters who have some sort of magical power he can still hold his ground with no abilities other than the fact like all anime characters he can jump really high. I also forgot about his ability to throw roses, which is something you do not see every day, except in Gintama and Pokemon. Jokes aside, it is more of the fact he has no abilities compared to everyone else and can still hold his ground somewhat that makes him at number four.Akatsuki

Akatsuki, again, I really find it hard to talk about the female characters, but yes again she is adorable and super bad-ass. So, getting that part out of the way, like how it is going to be for most female characters, let me discus what they are like. A part of me was really debating whether or not to put her on the list. One of the biggest downsides to her character, at least how I see it is that she really cannot get over how Shiro left for that short time in season two. However, I also have to say I liked that arc because it really allowed a lot of development for her character and how she realized that she is in fact strong. Plus like the next ninja, she can be a little funny at times. Compared to the other characters on this list she gets shy, which is something I do not see often that gets pulled off well with female characters. Most are just shy in first encounter, but she always seems to be shy. I really like that about her character since there is still plenty room for her character to grow in a different way. There are other reasons why she is here at number four I am sure, but she deserves this spot.

Number 3: Sora (No Game No Life) and Levi Kazama (Trinity Seven)

sora

No Game No Life was one of the series that surprised me on how good it was. Sora, well to put it simply fifty percent of the time he can just be a lecherous person, while the other fifty percent of the time a super genius planning about fifty steps ahead before the first move was even made. He can be funny with his NEET behaviors and really the balance of it all makes him a character on this list. It is just a weird combination of everything that makes it all work out, which is why I like his character.Levi

Levi aka Ninja from Trinity Seven. Levi is my favorite character in the manga, and that held up clearly in the show as well too. She was not like most characters and can easily just be as inappropriate as the guys and takes no offence to it in anyway. To top it off she is overall balanced in everything from being a good fighter and being one of the funniest characters. In the more recent chapter her magus outfit was finally revealed, and that too was amazing. Although I do not have much to say for both the characters in this one, their actions and what they do with those actions really make up for why they are on the list at number three.

Number 2: Akame and Tatsumu (Akame ga Kill)

So, unintentionally the next two are from the same series, much like the one Tatsumi_Smilethat will be at number one, but OH well, they are both amazing anyways.

Anyway, I think I have not driving into the ground hard enough that I enjoyed Akame ga Kill, so it would make sense that I like the title character and the main character. Personally when it came to this series Akame and Esdeath are two of my favorite Akame_smilingfemale characters. I prefer Esdeath, but since all the characters on this list have been heroes, I decided to keep the list as heroes.  Anyway, for both characters they fit what I like to see in characters. I think I can just stop it there without saying more since I am starting to get a little tired about talking Akame ga Kill so much nearly four weeks in a row.

Number 1: Shiro Emiya and Saber (Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works)

Yes, the only two that can be at the top of this list are two of my favorite shirotcharacters of all time. Saber probably being at number one for favorite female characters, with Shiro in the top five at least, especially with this installment. Shiro is probably one of the most heroic characters out there, which is why he is so admirable to me. Sure he might not be one of the funniest characters, but everything else he does make up for it.

Saber, spoilers aka King Arthur, I think that spoiler is justified with her real name being mentions in saberFate Stay Night (2006), Fate Zero, Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works film. So you get the point. I had to say that information to get down one of my reasons of liking her. I like Arthurian Legends, one of my books I want to publish takes ideas from that. So seeing another work twist it in some way is enjoyable. Okay, now to get to other reasons besides her real identity. She is an insanely awesome fighter compared to most characters I have seen. She is very thoughtful and is constantly thinking. Besides that at times she is funny, and let’s face it she is super adorable when you least suspect it as well. Now to avoid further humiliations I am done talking now until next year’s Top Five Male and Female Characters of 2015 with Saber still being at number one.

Other characters that did not make the list are, the entire female cast of Sailor Moon, Seitokai Yakuindomo, D-frag, Witchcraft Works, Date A Live II, and the rest of the Trinity Seven members. For male characters, D-Frag, Date A Live, and a lot of others.

So, what are your top five characters of 2015?

Top 5 Original and Best Series of 2014

top 5

Alright, so this top five is going to be different. It is going to count down two series simultaneously. Each one will be discussing one series that is based off of source material and one original work. This list is also not continuing shows that second season aired this year, unless of course the first season aired as well this year. This is also not counting shows that started in 2013 fall season, so keep that in mind.

Number Five: Space Dandy and D-Frag

Space Dandy, for starters I have to say is amazing. Now, correct me if I am wrong, but it is the first series that was dubbed before subbed. Both were coming out simultaneously as well. Personally I did not see it, and I wish I did. However, because of the fact that it was being dubbed and subbed simultaneously, then I have to give it some major props for that. If I have seen it, I am fairly certain it would be higher on this list because of that.

D-Frag, is one of my favorite manga. It gets funnier and funnier to say the least the longer it goes. Although it might not have been funnier compared to others that came out this year, it is still on the list with the fact that it was in the winter season, which to me always seems to have few new shows. I think it is more of the reason why I liked the manga that is on this list, but at the same time it is one of the few shows that follow closely to the manga and I mean closely. Sure, they skipped a small arc, but that was later covered in the OVA that came out later this year. With the fact of the comedy and how close it follows the source material, it is on this list because of that.

Number 4: World Conquest Zvezda Plot and The Fruit of Grisaia

World Conquest Zvezda Plot, can be summed up by questioning what is it exactly. The series, at least in some way is connected to Type Moon, and in my last Top Five I mentioned how really anything by Type Moon I find enjoyable. This series fits into that category. Although it tells a complete story, at the same time it is clear that it can still have another season. It is called World Conquest, and sorry for the spoiler, but they only conquered Japan at the end of the show. Clearly it could have more, but from where it is now, it was enjoyable while it lasted as an original series.

The Fruit of Grisaia is a show that, well like some in the fall lineup, I did not have high hopes for it when going into it. It seems like this year there were several shows that really surprised me in how they turned out, this is one of them another is also on this list as well. For starters, I cannot wait for the more episodes in April. Even if they did not get the other Visual Novels adapted, the series has a well thought out story, and character development as time went on. My only problem really was the final arc and how long it took, at the same time that was important. Regardless, this was probably one of the best surprises this year when it came to watching something I thought would be different. Also the novels are getting a port to Steam sometime in the next year.

Number 3: Aldnoah.Zero and Parasyte

Aldnoah.Zero would be higher on this list if not for my major concerns for season two or the second half of however you would put it. The final minute or so in the last episode is the reason why I feel that way. It is from the creator of Psycho Pass, although his work is good, with how Psycho Pass 2 turned out I am a little worried, as in a lot worried for what could happen. With that out of the way, this series was probably the biggest one this year. I only recently got into the mecha genre; Buddy Complex was the one that got me into it. This series was wonderful. Out of the like five mecha series I have seen, this one was different in the sense that the only ones who had different mechas where the bad guys. Yet, that aside this series clearly did something right. It was entertaining; I even had to stop watching several times since I could not deal with just watching a single episode. It would probably be at number one if not for my concerns with best original work for 2014.

Parasyte, I have to say might be a little early which is why it is also high on the list. At the same time compared to other shows this year I know I can go in episode to episode and be entertained and will not want to wait for the following week. Sure there are other series that came out this year that made me feel the same way, but those are mostly shows that are on their second season or remakes. What really surprises me and what I really like is the fact that they are adapting it in full, and it was based off a manga from almost two decades ago, which I have to say is amazing. Unlike Aldnoah.Zero, I do not have worries for this series as of right now. So, I am glad it is at spot number 3.

Number 2: Selector Infected WIXOSS and No Game No Life

Selector Infected WIXOSS is one of the other series as well as No Game No Life that were a lot better than you would think. However, at least I think, Selector did not get as much limelight as it should have. What I liked about it through the two seasons is that it told a complete story. At the same time I originally dropped the show before the massive plot twist that was in I want to say episode eight. It is because of that plot twist and the fact that after that plot twist I really enjoyed this series. Recently home video rights were required, and it may be a series that I may or may not pick up in the future since I enjoyed it. Personally it is not top ten worthy, maybe top twenty at least for me.

No Game No Life, need I say more? Yes, this was a show that I personally thought would be bad, but decided to watch it anyway. It was funny and rather enjoyable. My only real problem with this series was the cliff hanger at the end of the final episode that makes me want a second season, which more than likely there will be. At the same time I am also thinking of getting the novels once they get their English release, although that is unlikely since I am already getting too much as is. Regardless, I doubt I need to say a lot since this was a hugely popular series this year.

Number 1: Yuki Yuna wa Yusha de Aru and Akame ga Kill

Ironically the number one spot is taken by work from the same author. As I said in the Akame ga Kill discussion, it is my favorite manga. Although I was a little disappointed at first with the original ending that thought quickly changed with the blind side in the twenty-third episode. So, sure it is bias to put that at number one, but I mean, this is a discussion and opinion related piece, so it would make sense. Really any reason why I would put this at number one could be found in my Akame ga Kill discussion, but I pretty much summed it up with what I mentioned the twenty-third episode.

Now, for the original piece, it fits into the same category. Although I did not really know that it was by the creator of Akame ga Kill, this did not stop the fact that I really enjoyed it. In fact I only learned this information later when the series was on the final episode. Much like getting into the Mecha genre this year the Magical Girl genre became a thing as well. This one was my favorite that I have seen the characters, the development of the characters and story. It was defiantly one of if not the best original work this year, even though like most shows had their flaws.

Well, notable mentions I would have to put a lot of shows that had their second season and a lot of show in general. But mentioning ones that did not turn out as well as I would have liked would be Psycho Pass 2, Bryhildr in the Darkness, and Trinity Seven. Although Trinity Seven is the better of the three, and the manga of Bryhildr is a lot better, but might be worth checking out. This is more disappointment in knowing that they could both turn out better.

Top Five: Favorite Anime

top 5

I have stated several times that I have seen a lot of anime and I mean a lot, over two hundred. Still, there are some that I wish I never saw, which are few. Then there are others, one in which is on this list, which I am glad I came back to for a second chance. Although some might have lost their original luster when I first saw them, it does not change the fact that I still hold them dear. This, I have gone into without a reviewer’s state of mind, to go down memory lane to discuss why they are my favorite series in this case.

Number 5: Anything from the Fate Seriesscreenshot-logo

I am talking about Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night, and the other series with that title, be it a spin off, prequel, parody, or alternate telling. This, multiple different anime series I label as a single. This is mostly because it is in the same universe. One could argue with the fact that Kara No Kyokai also exists in this universe, as well as Tsukihime, but I am talking about only the Fate/Stay Night series. They are good in their own right, I only just watch Tsukihime recently, and Kara No Kyokai is at my number seven for favorite series. Anyway this is about the Fate Series and not just a Type Moon discussion.

When Fate/Zero, as in the dub of it were coming out, I had only been into anime for a little over a year at that point. I wanted to check that series out only to find out about the original Fate/Stay Night. I will admit, despite me not seeing it in forever and the current series is amazing, that it does have a flaw here and there. That series is different from all of them, since it gives an original ending, which takes pieces from all of the endings. At the same time it follows closer to the Fate ending.

This is a franchise, which is really different from a series to series basis. Fate/Zero is nothing like Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya. I like that on how each is different, yet still holds the same aspects. They are individual in their own right, which makes me like each of the series. I know I could go in watching the next series and enjoy it because of it. Type Moon is one of the few companies, I guess, where when a new anime based off their work comes out, I will watch it. It is simple as that. I have the Fate series to thank for that. It really opened up a lot of different series.

Number 4: The Bakemonogatari Series

This is defiantly a series one could not binge watch, sort of. I think my record for episodes was almost three or four in a row. That is about as good as it gets in all honesty. This series I like to sum up with that you could get about seven episodes of nothing but talking which is then followed by about all of three seconds of a fight before it goes back to Bakemonogatari_Logonothing but talking.

I mentioned earlier that there are some shows that I did not watch only to go back later. This is one of them. It was back in November 2012 when I first watched the first two episodes. Then I stopped. I did not like the talking. With my ADHD it felt like I needed to be medicated just to pay attention. There was nothing but talking. So I stopped.

That following summer in 2013, well the “Second Season” began. I noticed the huge episode length compared to the other seasons. This made me curious about it. So, I decided to give it another shot. I started to get more of the jokes then I originally got when watching it, mostly because I have watched a lot more anime. I love some of the jokes that can be done in the series, that and the camera shots. However during the time trying to catch up to where it was airing, which took a long time almost two months, I would watch an episode before stopping. Then I managed to get to the second season and marathon it like crazy. That was when I realized that I really enjoy the show. That is why it is at number four.

I may have a love hate relationship with this series, this mostly because I am still trying to watch the last five episodes that came out in August earlier this year. That still does not change the fact that I know I could easily go in and enjoy it like I always do and look forward to whatever comes out of the series next.

Number 3: Date A Live

My first review was Date A Live. So, some things that make this series my favorite are already known. I know I can easily go back and rewatch it, laugh at the same things and such. However, I think one of the reasons why I ended up liking it so much was when it came out. My favorite series ended, and thus I had a case of the Void. That feeling that Date-A-Live-Logoyou just need to watch more of that series, but you are not going to get it. So, Date A Live was watched, as well as about fifty other series as well since it snowballed and I watched shows as they came out. Date A Live I also managed to find English translations of the novels, so I read the first, second, and third within a week. This made me really look forward to it more and more.

There were times were I questioned why I like this particular so much, but it gets me thinking about the others on the list. There was just something when I first watched it that made me know, that yes, I really like this.  So, whatever the real reason may be for me to like this series, be it that I know it or not, it has a firm hold on the third spot for my favorite series.

Number 2: A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun

Index, goes back to before it was dubbed. That was how long ago when I first watched it. The dub ended up coming out later that year. For this series, I really liked it. Ironically enough this was one of the series that I found through an abridge series. So, I wanted to check it out. Well, judging by the fact that it is at number 2, I enjoyed it. I like the Certain_Magical_Index_Bannerstory, each one is different, and there is no real over arcing plot. At the same time you need to watch each episode to know what happens.

I also put Railgun on the list because it just takes one of the female protagonists from Index and makes her the main character. Railgun S, I really enjoyed. In Index the Sisters arc was one of my favorites in the first season. So going into further detail I found really interesting.

Anyway, this series was I would like to say the eighth and ninth anime series that I saw. It was also the third series that really dragged me in. Code Geass was one. Oh My Goddesses became another at a later date, despite it being the second series that I watched. I was really dragged into enjoy it. I also loved the science and fantasy aspects coming together as one, which is what I work a lot with in my stories. So, that was probably another thing that really made me enjoy it. I was able to think of new ways to look at my stories because of it.

Number 1: Fairy Tail

Yes, Fairy Tail is at number one. It was the first series I watched subbed, and liked. I ended up catching up to all the episodes, at the time there was only 130, in about two weeks. It was just nonstop on how many episodes I would watch throughout the course of the day. I think we all have that one shonen anime we like more than others. I was fairy_tail_logonever allowed to watch One Piece or Naruto when I was little. Even now I am not really into those series as well, and only saw the first few episodes. Bleach I watch about 270 episodes, maybe (forgot the exact number where I stopped). The only reason why I stopped was due to filler stopping the arc several times. Then it was each fights dragging on for way longer than it should have been. For Fairy Tail I liked how they stopped mid arc so they did not have to interrupt it with filler. Without that I would not have watch nearly all the anime that I have, let alone gotten into Date A Live and half of the ones on this list. At the same time if I was not into Fairy Tail I would not have tried out all the anime that I have.

Currently I do have my problems with the current anime arc. I know it is filler, so they can be silly as they want to, but it seems to lose its luster I once held so dear for it. I also read the manga on a weekly basis, so I know it is worth the filler so they do not have to stop again mid-arc, especially with this one. The current arc is just way too amazing. (Okay fan boy mode is over now). I can take filler, just as long as it does not have to be put in between the actual story.

With all the ones in my top five, they have some sort of history. Sure, there may come a day where I do not like them as much. It is more of the nostalgia when remembering back on how I felt when I saw them for the first time. Without some of them I never would have gotten into anime as much as I am without them. Sure, someday one of these might fall lower, or not be my favorite for whatever reason. But for right now, these are my favorite series.

Ones that did not make the list, Attack on Titan, Oh My Goddess, Akame Ga Kill (depends how the final episode goes), D-Frag, and Kara No Kyokai. (Ha, did my top ten, not necessary in order, but all the shows are there).

The List

This is not being updated anymore, you can find the complete list here on MAL.

This is about ninety percent of shows that I have seen. Some I did not put on the list, kind of feel a little embarrassed for watching them, so they are not here for that reason. I think I only removed about ten or so, at most. Although I have a bit of a backlog, I kind of watch series that I just feel like watching, even if they were not on that backlog. So if someone recommends me something I might consider it. This is also not the list in order of series I watched, it was whatever I remembered at the time. This will hopefully be edited over time with more series. I also did my best to get as many in their English names as possible.
