I Graduate

Before I start each time I wrote something that will be marked with a date. Some may be days side by side, others I do not know. I am uncertain if I will post this. If I do, well, yeah. This I guess is a document leading up to my College Graduation and my day of Graduation.

Also with a serious picture as the featured image. Continue reading “I Graduate”

I Celebrate a Year

This is a long post since I am thinking about what happened each month of the past year. I was thinking of maybe doing it in two parts, but to me that would kind of seem pointless, since if you did not read the first one, why bother reading the second one. Anyway as the title suggests it is time to celebrate The Reviewer’s Corner One Year Anniversary.

Before I begin to all of my followers, fellow bloggers, and friends this last year has been wonderful. So thank you every single one of you. Although I probably won’t do anything for a second year anniversary (well, not as much stuff as I am doing this year that is), here is hoping I can look back next year to on all the things that have yet to happen. Still thank you every last one of you.jump into my arms

Date a Live was the first review

I had the idea to blog about anime and manga, ironically because I thought “Like anyone blogs about anime and manga.” Turns out a lot of people did. But I really loved writing, and although my story on Deviantart never got anywhere, so much so to the point where I stopped posting online now for there and Wattpad, I wanted to blog about something I liked. There was no community there that allowed me to communicate with people, unlike here.

So, I wanted to blog, simple as that. I was not really sure what to call my site. But I viewed it as my little Corner of the web where I am a Reviewer, thus getting the name. I did not want to say Joe’s Anime Corner or Blog or something like that, mostly since starting off I wanted to focus on Anime, Manga, and Comics. Although I never really focused on the comics.

I was not really sure how to go about with blogging, since I did not really go in and look at others, not till January. But even then I was really going in blind and still am blind on what blogging is and how to be good at it. That first month I got a total of, seven posts I believe, and about 82 views, which actually surprised me looking that up.

Before I continue, hopefully going over that first month is a good lessons for those starting off blogging, it does not boom overnight or in the first two months or maybe even several. Just don’t give up when you are just starting.

January

The second month came and I was now more aware of other bloggers. I did not really talk to many bloggers and I was still getting the hang of the ideas that I want to do. Unfortunately I also started to notice the early signs of blogging where some that I followed, who also were beginning, already were showing signs of stopping. This was back when I had themes for each month, this one was Magic, so, and I was a little embarrassed about talking how I liked Magical girl series.

Mavis'_reaction
The Fairy Tail Tarturaus Arc discussion was an early post and is one of the more popular ones.

Looking back, I kind of glad that I could notice that I was embarrassed about some posts. At the same time it really shows that I changed a lot since then. Looking back at some of the writing, I may have a similar style of writing, but now it is a little more grammar free. But really what stuck out for this month I started talking to other bloggers more. Nick from AnimeCorps and Dandylion13 (who since decided to take a break from blogging) from Viewer Discretion is Advised. Those two stick out the most.

February

umi
The Love Live review, the early signs of Umi being best girl and the Idol Waifu.

I did the 30 Day Anime Challenge. I cannot really remember were exactly where I thought or saw the idea of the 30 Day Anime Challenge. I think, although I am not certain, it was after hearing and looking up the 12 Days of Anime which happens around Christmas time. I will say that although there was not much happening other than that. But by doing that Challenge it really gave me more time to think about blog posts and getting used to blogging. It really feels like a lot of bloggers want to stop blogging because they don’t feel like writing or are not getting any views. I went from just 200 views to over a 1000 in just that month. It was a rather large boom which brought people to my blog. Now I do not know how to get an insane amount of views, however getting used to blogging and being persistent is the first step, and the 30 Day Anime Challenge really helped with that. I think because of that I never really felt that slump in the 6 months. I did feel the slump but not so much to the point where I would have stopped blogging.

March

shido
I almost forgot about the Date a Live Theory posts, I had several ideas, but ultimately decided to stop doing those posts.

March really got me into Twitter. This is thanks to Senpai, I mean Miharusshi-chan, I mean Miharusshi from Anime Vios. Alright so Twitter does not really do a lot for my blog. But due to getting used to Twitter I became more social, more warmed up, to people not just here blogging but on Twitter as well. It did help spread the word about it, and I know of a few people from Twitter that check out my posts time to time. I talk to a lot of bloggers, some who blog as regularly as me, to ones that are bloggers who haven’t done a post in a while. I finally found a group of people to talk about anime, not just through a post and what that post was about, but just about anything from ongoing shows to older series as well. I finally found people who know what I am talking about for once. It was really nice, and I liked it because of it.

April

tea time
If only I could go back and not jump the gun praising this show in the first impressions.

Nothing really stuck out that happened in April. I did start weekly reviews. I did do that Collaboration with UnOtaku. But looking back there is not really that much that sticks out that I did here. I did notice that when it came to anime it was the early signs of me being more critical, and not watching shows to watch it. I watch it because I really enjoy it. I pick out ones that are bad and just got bored. I think that is what made me go from normally watching about 25 series a season to this season of less than 10, although this season might generally be boring in general. I know because of the fact that I thought I would be working with my dad over the summer building up posts and thinking of what to do for posts of the summer made it rather slow. Still, although I say something always happens in April, nothing really stuck out for this year’s April other than that.

May

comics collection
Comic theme month, and that is not all the comics I have. Still I would like to maybe do a discussion talking about them someday, not sure though.

That time where I wanted to make this a blog about comics, those were good times. I have not done anything about comics since. I mean on one hand I cannot really think of anything. On another hand, I am slowly getting out of comics. I would have liked to of done at least a discussion about the comics that got me into comics. But I did do a discussion about my thoughts on the Marvel Cinematic Universe  and things like that. A part of me still wishes I could do things relating to superheroes and comics here, it is just, I do not know what I could do. Even then those posts were not really that popular and are among the least viewed posts. Although that would not stop me, it is still on my mind seeing that I want to write things people would enjoy and that I enjoy writing. I do enjoy writing them; it is just there is not much I could think about talking about that would be relevant.

June

In all honesty all I remember is reading a lot of manga, watching a lot of anime, and I have no idea what I did the month of June. I only remember the amount of anime and manga I read was because I was the only one home until the end of the month. My siblings were still in school, my mom still worked. Now I don’t get that freedom since my younger brother has Fridays off and my mom is unemployed. So, no more wide-screen tv to watch anime on Fridays and my collection is becoming harder to read. I remember there was prepping and talks with Deven about our Collaboration we did in July.

excited-cheer
Also forgot there was celebrating the 6 months of doing this.

After back tracking in my posts, all I really did this month was Award posts since I was nominated for an insane amount. I think I only got nominated for one other since then, not sure. But it was for almost two weeks straight of just award posts. They all seemed to blend, so it made sense why I don’t really remember what happened that month. There was also the fact I was finishing the Yamada and the Seven Witches review, which one felt like I had to force myself to do it since I was not too into the anime as I would have liked. So, I think if I run into that problem I might just stop doing review on it and explain why.

July

musume 8 4
Although this was from episode 8 and not from something that came out in July, I still wanted to use a Monster Musume pic.

Well, Monster Musume, and Actually I am reviews happened. I am actually surprised how well I did doing both of those series on a weekly basis for reviews. I did not mind doing those reviews and only having nothing but reviews coming out from July to September seemingly, it is just I really wish I could have done something else besides just the weekly reviews. There was the Collaboration with Deven. That was the last one and I really wish I could do more Collaborations with other blogs. I just need to figure out who and what we could do. That always seems to be the tricky part.

August

the mask
Mid-season impressions were a thing like always, also I still have yet to finish this show. Silly me.

Reviews, lots and lots of reviews. Also I watched Kiddy Grade which gave me the void for the first time in a long time after I finished it. I really want to watch it again. This is another month were I am struggling to remember what happened exactly.

Of course now looking back all I did was reviews. I did not do anything else. No wonder why I am drawing a blank. Really wish I did something else. I know I stopped Top Fives since I wanted to revamp them in some way or another. That and I were running out of ideas, luckily a lot of ideas have been given to me so that should be set for a while.

Now I am at that awkward point in the post where I stopped a few times only to come back again. Well, at least it is easy since I am just focusing on a month basis, also how this only happens in these posts.

September

There was nothing. School started back up again for my senior year. Classes and getting used to school again took priority. The only real things that came out where reviews, both series and weekly.

am ep 10 4
Not a lot of Jitsu Wa Watashi wa pictures compared to Monster Musume, but I always went for the silly ones.

I did start being the “editor in the shadows” over at Anime Corps, funny enough the first one I edited was the award nomination that I nominated them for. But, I am not here to talk about that blog, I am here to talk about mine, so that is all I will say in that matter.

There was also a lot of planning from what I remember. Although I did not get much done on the blog, the thoughts of National Novel Writing Month were on my mind. Which was why I was doing a lot of planning, between what would happen come November, should I do a weekly review if it means that I will stop for a month, and when will I work on posts for the One Year Anniversary. I am also like 50% sure I started what is probably the longest post I have been working on and one that has so much thought into it I am rather proud of. It also has yet to come out, The Sub vs Dub Discussion, which I want to, say written out, it is nearing the end, but it has well over 2000 words now. To get an idea it will be a little longer than this one.

October and November

utararwarmano 2
Because Nostalgia from the first series that I saw like a week before the first impressions came out, and it was a little bit of a mess this season for the impressions.

The 30 Day Manga Challenge. On one hand I really wish I had other posts coming out during these two months. On the other I am glad I came out with them rather than nothing at all. Most of my time was spent working on National Novel Writing Month for planning, normal novel work, looking into grad school, many papers for school, working on looking into internships and apply to them, and actually writing for NaNoWriMo. Although I did not reach the goal of 50K, I did reach my personal goal of 25k once I realized I was too busy with school. The two months really gave me time to think on what direction I want to continue going. I do like doing weekly reviews, and normal reviews, but I do want something else to happen here as well.

Now: December 1st

Today is the day this post comes up. I would have liked to of had it finished before today. But having it finished the day when it all began one year ago sort of makes me look back even more. It is still setting in. I saw a lot of blogs end that only just began. I have seen some that started a little after me do better. I have seen bloggers who had a long run decide it was best to stop for now. A year went by so fast and so much has happened. It really does not feel like a year. I honestly don’t think I have had this much writing in such a long time.

A part of me has always worried that my writing will not entertain people, give them thoughts, or cheer them up. Between the last few years going on Devaintart or Wattpad and never getting a comment or feedback I thought maybe I was not good enough. However here I found a place and restored my faith in my writing. There are no real words that can describe how thankful I am to each and every one of you. It feels like a simple thank you is not enough.

But I do not know what the future may bring. I do want to continue blogging for as long as possible, even if it is not as much as I do now with two or three posts a week. However, I am glad that in the last year I made so many fond memories. So, although I feel a simple thank you is not enough, thank you every last one of you for a great year, and hopefully to many more.

thank you everyone

Thank you everyone, be it if you just started reading a few days ago or have been here since the beginning. I hope you have enjoyed what has happened and I hope you enjoy what will come.

One Year Anniversary The December Update

Well, the day this goes up marks the one year anniversary of The Reviewer’s Corner, but this is not the special post for that. Anyway, let me start here on this post, by saying thank you everyone for the last year. It has been a lot of fun. One reason why I blog so much is because I have fun doing it and talking to people about just about anything. So, thanks. I am also so glad to be back from my Quasi-Hiatus.

Anyway, this is unlike other updates. In recent months doing an update for what is to come in a three-month period has not really worked. I mean it did at first but that was because I had an idea of a theme for that month, I have not really had a month theme going since July. So, I am going to try to update once a month on what I hope that will come out in that time period.

So, another important announcement, besides the obvious new layout that has been here for almost a month, on the right there are polls. These polls will decide the order of the next three Top Fives and Top Favs. That way I have something I would like to write about and people can vote on which one they would like to see next. The current poll is what will be the second round.

The first round for Top Fives are as followed (it was very close adding in the twitter poll as well):

  1. Opening Themes (December 18)
  2. Antagonists (January 1)
  3. Least Favorite Anime ( January 15)

The first round for Top Favs are as followed (It was a tie in both polls, so I decided the order):

  1. Fairy Tail (December 11)
  2. Birdy The Mighty Decode (December 26 only because I don’t want it out on Christmas)
  3. Kiddy Grade (January 8)

The polls to decide the second round will close on January 1, you may vote daily for both polls. Suggestions for Top Fives are always welcome.

So, now comes to a question on what exactly are Top Favs. I have mentioned the idea on Twitter and even did a poll, there seemed a lot in favor of doing it. I will mention what the changes to Top Fives and Reviews will be in a moment. Anyway Top Favs are similar to Top Fives, I will admit that the first few may be trying to figure out an order of how to do things. But Top Favs focus on a single series that I consider one of my favorites. I will then discus why it is one of my favorites, what it is about, what I don’t like about the series, and things of that nature. One thing I really like about anime is that we all enjoy different series and sharing why we like certain series can be really fun, so I want to do that with these posts. It will not only spread the word about something I like, but hopefully I can get insight on a show that maybe you do not like that I do. I might do a post talking more in-depth of what will be in them, but for now that is my plan.

Alright, I did talk about the changes that will come in reviews and Top Fives back on that official Twitter launch post. Let me start by saying Weekly Reviews will not be affected, I will still have a similar set up to now, but their might be a slight change. Not sure if I will do two shows next season, but I know of one.

Anyway, Top Fives will have a very similar set up, only now I will also talk about what the show is about. It seems like that was always missing, I would talk about why I like the show or character, but never what it is about. So, hopefully it can give a little more insight on what I am talking about.

Reviews will have a completely different format. They will be more serious and more analytical, it felt like the ones previously they were too easy to write and it was mostly based on what I liked about the show. I want to have a more critical and professional way to go about with it, since I would not mind trying to become a reviewer in the near future to get paid. It will still, like all reviews, have that means that it does in a way relate to personal opinion, however just less.

The reviews this month include: Date A Live Season One Re-review, Date A Live Season 2 re-review (Both December 8), Digimon Tri Movie One, and Penguindrum (Maybe). I was thinking about doing Jessica Jones, but that would put me out of my comfort zone.

So, other posts that have plans to coming out this month are as followed with Dates of other previous posts:

  • I the American Otaku: I Celebrate 1 Year Date: December 1
  • Nanowrimo Follow Up Date: December 5
  • Date A Live Season One Re-review Date: December 8
  •  Date A Live Season 2 re-review Date: December 8

  • Twelve Days of Anime (still a maybe) Date: 12-24
  • Top Five: Opening Themes Date: December 18
  • Digimon Tri Review Date: December 22
  • Top Favs: Birdy The Mighty Decode Date: December 26
  • Final Impressions of Fall 2015 Date: Week of December 27
  • Pre-Winter Season 2016 Impressions Date: Week of December 27
  • Sub VS Dub Discussion (Been working on it for 2 months now) Date: Unknown
  • Tips for New Bloggers: Date: Unknown (might be in the future)
  • I the American Otaku: I Go on My Last Trip Date: Unknown

The Nanowrimo and Major 200th Post Update

Well, for starters Nanowrimo is National Novel Writing Month. It takes place throughout all of November with the goal of writing 50k words in that time period. I have brought up this fact over on the update back in September and it is the reason for the 30 Day Manga Challenge Posts as well as the fact that there is no weekly review for this season.

I decided to upload this a day earlier to make it the 200th post, will talk more about it at towards the end. So, here is other stuff before that.

Anyway, so in a way the next month is a hiatus, sort of. This month, well October. I really wanted to get out other types of posts other than the first impressions and the 30 Day Manga Challenge Posts (which will go through November during my Hiatus). However between school work and Nanowrimo prep this obviously did not happen. I also did not reach my first goal of getting my book done and ready for publication, December 31st is my next goal, and I will have less homework since I would be out halfway through the month.

Reviews and Top Fives I am reevaluating on how I go about with those posts. Reviews I would like to make more formal and critical, as well as still have that typical style of writing I have. To me as of right now, they seem to be dull, and not as thoughtful as I would like them to be. It does not take much effort, and well it might be strange, but I want them to take more of my time doing and being overall better quality. One of my current classes is focusing on reviews, so I would like to get it more professional for those reasons. There is also the fact that I personally want better quality at least in reviews to go on here to use as a possible reference if I want to become a movie review or some type of reviewer in general. This will more than likely be just for series reviews and episode reviews will still be the way they are in how they are set up.

Top Fives in those cases I want to mix it up. Looking back on the posts, and even thinking about how I wrote them it really felt it was relating more to personal reasons, which is obviously why it is the way it is. Some cases I did not even start them until forty-five minutes before uploading. At the same time I wish to do two things that add onto that aspect. The first being I would like more interactions. I did ask for some, and I still have some ideas for it. But I would love to get feedback on what top five I should do. That way I get to do the personal reason for it, as well as get interactions from the community and what they would like to see. The other thing that I would add is actually talking about what the series is about, like the plot. I only brought up the concept or my reasons why. But by going over what the series is about, might give the idea to check it out as well.

Also, for right now if you have a suggestions for Top Fives you will see please comment here or on the List of Top Fives Page or even on twitter. (Next one is December 12)

Both Reviews and Top Fives I would love to start doing again come December. This gets me into the next part of this update. When Nanowrimo is done, it is December 1st. Although most people, as in like all the people other than me, December 1st marks my first post here. December 8th marks my official first post being the Date a Live review. Which will to mark I plan on doing a two-part re-review. It would be in my new form of reviews as well as separate season one and season two since the first review covered both in that single post. That is all I have to say about what is coming this December. There is going to be a lot more I hope to get out celebrating the first year here. Where some people only do a single post, well, I think it is going to be obvious that it is not going to be a single post to celebrate.  I will talk more in the December Update.

So, that is a lot I need to do. Besides that 50k word goal by November 30th I have several school papers I need to work on, more than likely one or two posts for that One Year Anniversary as well as re-watching Date a Live. So the real amount of words that will be written, will be well over 60k throughout the month, and that is if I hit the 50k word goal. Right now, counting the reviews for December, I only really have about 2 maybe 3 posts for now that deal with Celebrating that first year, but I have another discussion post I have been and still working on which will be out as well.  So, I am going to be very busy throughout November.

I was thinking of explaining what my story for Nanowrimo is about, but I will talk more on an After Math Post this December.

excited-cheer

So, as for this being the 200th post. I just want to say thank you everyone. Sure at least 45 are the 30 Day Anime and Manga Challenge, but between reviews weekly or not and other posts it has been a lot of fun and I really enjoy doing this. I know I wanted to do something special for the 100th and then again for 150, and before I knew it 200 was here and I still have not done anything amazing. I think I am going to stop trying. But for the 500th one I will definitely have to do something, whenever that is. So, once again, thank you everyone.

Again thank you everyone. Also if you have not noticed I made a banner. I am still working on it but I would love suggestions.  As always, well not in this case, I hope you will enjoy what is to come.

Creative Blogger Award

creative award

So, well how do I put this? I story of put off working on this post for a while, partially because I forgot to and the other being not sure when I should post it. Because of that now I have been nominated this three times. So consider this the only post I will do for it, at least for now.

Anyway enough about that short ramble. Thank you Krystallina from Daiyamanga, Ka-chan from Ka-chan Anime Reviews, and Yuri Overlord Og-man from Yuri Nation for this nomination. I will say there is no way I can think of a total of 45-60 people to nominate for this, so I will nominate as many people as I can think of. So the rules.

Sunshine Award and Real Neat Blog Award Nomination from The Yuri Nation

For starts as a person who said he was going to stop doing these he really has not kept his word. But oh well. Here I am again, and I decided whenever I get nominated for these things they will just come out on a single day. Anyway enough about that.

This time I was nominated by my friend, Overlord-G, also known as Og-Man on twitter. He runs The Yuri Nation. So thank you for the nomination. It is also now when I realize I was also nominated for a Real Neat Blog award by him as well and both questions will be answered. There was also the fact he referred to me as Joey Mercury, and I did not know who he was till I looked it up in Google, anyway enough about that, thank you and time to get started.

100 Followers Special

Normally what I do is I type something in a word document then type it here. But that is not the case. It is kind of odd. These past few weeks since hitting ninety followers, well I was trying to think of what I could do when I reach 100. The more I thought about it, well it really seemed like I could not think of anything to do for it. When I woke up this morning I was welcomed by my e-mail stating that I got another follow, which was the 100th.  In seven months this was reached. I am not really sure what to say now ever. Normally if you have been following me for awhile be it a few months or even a few days you might notice my posts tend to be long. Well, this one will be short. I cannot think of anything else to say but three words:

thank you everyone

Thank you for following this blog, there will hopefully be a lot to come in the future.

I Celebrate Six Months

excited-cheer

Well, my first post was technically December 1st, even though the Date a Live review came out on the 8th. Anyway this will be the only time where I will do a post like this unless it is a year mark. That and with a lot of blogs that started around the time that I did have all come and gone I think it feels right for surviving to celebrate being around for six months in the blogging community.

20150526_145726
Another day another bad pic taken from my phone. I should take a better picture at some point

So, let me begin by saying hello, I am Joe and I just want to say thank you to everyone. So, narcissism states that my gift from me to you is a pic of my face, not sure why, but anyway. (Kind of wanted to show my face just because it will make it feel as if I am closer with my blog and what not. Only time I will probably since I am bad at taking pictures. Give me a break that was my first Selfie, if that is considered a Selfie.) These past six months have been really fun. The last few years of college have been weird, and well I am not really good at talking to people. Yet, through the past few months in blogging here it feels like I made a lot of friends, acquaintances, and just people I could talk to from time to time.

Sure the Reviewer’s Corner did not really get a lot of consistent traffic until March. This was after the 30 Day anime challenge, which really helped. Anyway I am keeping this post rather short, since one I plan do a major discussion for the one year anniversary, and two I do not want to make this post completely about myself.

So, although I do not know how many e-mail followers is spam and which ones are not, those of you that are not spam thank you. I wish there was a better way to put that, so I am sorry. But I know there are several people that do follow only by e-mail, so those that do thanks.

Next, to each and every one of the 75 followers that has followed this blog since it began, excluding myself of course, thank you as well.

Now I am not done yet. There are several people that I wish to thank personally, for various reasons. Each links to their blog.

Miharusshi she runs Anime Vios. A great friend and without her it really feels like on Twitter I would not have become as social as I did and the same goes for here as well. It is really because of this that I was able to talk to a lot of people just in general. It is always fun to talk to you when we can, and it is just as fun when it is in a group when we have seemingly five talks all together. So, thank you.

tankyou
I saw this today on her blog, thank you it made me laugh. Although I have been into anime for 3 years, although that is sort of recent compared to some fans. It is still true though.

Nick from AnimeCorps. A great friend and although he may have given me the idea for the blogroll, but it was not for another month or so later till I talked with him almost daily, which it can just really be about anything really which is always fun.  As a side note thanks for getting me into Love Live after seeing countless number of Maki spam I caved in. Also curse thank you at the same time for getting me addicted to the Love Live School Idol Festival game as well. Anyway, thank you.

Dandylion13 from Viewer Discretion is Advised. A great friend and although we have not talked in while, when we did between our blogs it was fun. You have helped give me some ideas on what I should do, especially with the schedule I sometimes struggle to follow. It was fun for some of the conversations that we had over the last few months. Anyway, thank you, and I hope we can talk again at some point.

Deven from Anime Reviews and Lots of Other Stuff! also from AnimeCorps. Great friend, and not going to lie I keep forgetting how we really went about talking to each other. I think it was from Nick at first. But after that between Fate Stay Night, and Fairy Tail being our biggest discussions between the two of us it has been a lot of fun between that and all the random other talks between us be it here blogging or on twitter. So, thank you.

There are a lot of other people I wish to thank in no particular order, Otaku Judge from Otaku Judge, Unotaku from Unotaku, Lita Kino from Lita Kino Anime Reviews, Animereviewergirl from Shay-shay’s Anime blog, Thelimitlessimagination from The Limitless ImaginationArria Cross from Fujisei, OG Man from Yuri Nation, and I am sure so much more, they too have been good friends be it if we only really just started to talk recently, or have been talking for some time, thank you.

Instead of my usual as always if you like what you read feel free to follow, please check out those blogs. Sure some might be yours, but anyway. Thank you everyone, these past six months have been really fun. I have not had something fun to do like this in a while that turned into something so much more than what it really is.

To many more months of being around.

– Joe
